Blue Jays draft SS JoJo Parker with eighth pick
ATLANTA – The Toronto Blue Jays selected shortstop JoJo Parker eighth overall in the first round of Major League Baseball’s draft on Sunday.
The six-foot-two Parker, 18, attended Purvis High School in Mississippi. He became the highest-ever pick out of Purvis.

He batted .489 with 13 home runs, 64 runs scored and 35 RBIs this past season.
The 200-pound athlete also stole 30 bases to lead the Tornadoes (29-8) to the Class 4A state championship game.

Parker, also a right-handed pitcher on the high school level, boasted an 8-2 record on the mound with a 2.77 earned-run average and 89 strikeouts in 55.2 innings pitched.
He is currently signed to play college baseball with Mississippi State University next season.

Canada’s special envoy on antisemitism says Ontario needs to take seriously incidents of anti-Jewish bigotry targeted at students in public schools.
Deborah Lyons commissioned a survey of nearly 600 Jewish parents, and found hundreds of children were subjected to incidents including antisemitic bullying and blame for the carnage of Israel’s military conduct in the Gaza Strip.

Families reported incidents such as children chanting Nazi slogans and giving salutes, and teachers telling students that Israel does not exist.
The survey logged 781 incidents that it deemed antisemitic, including discussions on the Middle East that went beyond forceful criticism of Israel.
Lyons’ office approached various Jewish groups asking for them to promote the survey, and heard form families who have moved their children to other schools or removed markers of Jewish identity.
The report marks a rare move of federal rapporteurs singling out issues outside of Ottawa’s jurisdiction.

There was a fire over the weekend in Cell Block 1 of Kingston Penitentiary, which caused tours of the historic prison to close for a day.
Kingston Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to the penitentiary early Saturday morning to deal with the blaze but were forced to break in as there were issues with the locks.
“Access was challenging as keys and codes KFR were provided did not work,” Deputy Chief of Operations Don Carter told Global News in an email, adding that crews “forcibly” entered through a garage door.

“Once inside, the area around the building involved was tight and limited access with larger fire apparatus.”
Once firefighters were able to get inside, they had things under control by about 5:15 a.m., according to a release from the city. About 75 minutes later, crews had cleared the scene, with one firefighter needing treatment for heat exhaustion at the scene.
Carter said it was unclear what the source of the fire was and estimated the damage to be between $50,000 and $100,000.
“The scene has been turned over to Corrections Canada Investigators and is still under investigation,” he said.
A note on the Kingston Pen Tours website said the prison was closed to the public on Saturday but reopened on Sunday.
The penitentiary is perhaps Canada’s most famous prison, opening its doors in 1835 and remaining in operation until 2013.
The maximum security prison was home to a number of Canada’s most notorious inmates over that time, including Paul Bernardo, Clifford Olson and James Donnelly.
Since its closure, it has become a popular tourist destination while also serving as a filming location for a number of TV series, including Reacher, Mayor of Kingstown and Alias Grace.
